This is an on-going series on how to start a business. This mini-series focuses on starting a magazine publishing business.
A Magazine Part 6
Advertising
The first step is to look at the product you will be selling, space in your magazine. Does the layout of your magazine accomodate advertising space? Does your website page? If not you may want to address this. While clients are deciding on whether to advertise they will want to look at these things. You can show off these areas by putting up your own advertising or giving some away for free to show off your ad spaces. Just about everyone will want to advertise for free. This is okay in the beginning it helps build traction.
Now create a Media Kit. The Media Kit should show off your ad space sizes and general locations. Be sure and start off with some introductory offers to generate some interest. Diagram the sizes of each ad type and with each size you will show the price for multiple options i.e. 1 time advertisement vs a 6 month advertising option. Be sure to discount the multiple options. They must provide the ad to your specifications; size, color or black and white, dpi, etc.... The pdf book How to Publish Your Own Magazine comes with an example of a Media Kit. To purchase this pdf book see the side panel on the right.
This can take some time to generate interest. Be patient and persistant. You will need to include in your conversations with the potential client just exactly how big you mailing list is. Be honest about this and if they don't advertise this time maybe they will later

Starting a Business Part 6
This is an on-going series on how to start a business. This mini series is on how to start a magazine business.
A Magazine Part 5
Making Money
Now let's discuss why you have started in the magazine business. Did you start the magazine as a hobby or to make money? This is a question best answered, or only answered, by you. It is okay to publish a magazine because you are so passionate about your subject and making a little money on the side is a side benefit. If you are doing this for larger gains, maybe to do this full time then you have some work ahead of you, don't be discouraged, working hard will pay larger dividends. Let's look at a few ways to make money.
Google Adsense
Sign up for a Google GMail account and then sign up for Google Adsense. You have most likely have seen this form of advertising on web sites. If you are not sure what this is look to the right of this blog and find the Google Adsense. Companies sign up for Adwords, the advertising portion of this picture, and they pay for their advertising based on several parameters but what is important is they build keywords that make their advertising goes to the right sites. VERY IMPORTANT
With Google Adsense, the payment to you portion of this picture, is a method in which when people come to your site and look around they may notice an ad displayed on your Google Adsense and click on it. You have now made some money. How much money you've made is determined by multiple factors all of which are explained in the Google Adsense pages. Just think of this you have made money doing nothing, except that thing you have a passion for. Just hosting the Google Adsense makes sense. I encourage you to read some of the Adsense success stories. Some sites are making several hundred dollars a day just hosting an Adsense advertising banner.
Keywords
We talked about companies who key their Adword advertisement of keywords. Your job is build your site and add keywords that will attract search engine word searchs but these will also attract the right Adword advertisers.
Go through this excersise. Write down words that describe the topics you will cover in your magazine. Your list will grow the more you think about it. Write everything down then go through the list and move the top 10 words to the top. Now narrow down your top 5. These are your keywords that will draw searches and advertising to your site. These are the words that will get you noticed. NOTE: if your subject matter uses abbreviations make sure you spell the word out completely. Write all these words down in order in Word, Notepad, or Wordpad and save the file on your desktop. This will make it easier to find them when you add them to your stories.
Yes, you will need to add these words to every article, stories, that you put on the web site. Place these words in the Meta Tag, Labels, Keywords Section of your site. These words go by several different names.
Review
Sign up for a Google GMail account and through that sign up for a Google Adsense account. Read through the Google Adsense information to optimize your activity. It is very important to know the Adsense rules. Under no circumstances get your friends to 'help you out' by clicking away for you. Don't self promote the Adsense. Google has strict guidelines that you must obey.
Making money in this fashion is easy. You've really done nothing but put their banners up and forgetting about it. Making money without having to do anything is a great way to earn some income. This might be all your looking for..... then maybe your looking for more.

Starting a Business Part 5
This is an on-going series on how to start a business with a focus on starting a magazine.
A Magazine Part 4
Subscribers
As important as having quality content it is equally important to have an audience. To get subscribers one must take a multi-faceted approach.
Method 1: Purchase a mailing list and sent out invitations. This method will work but this is not always money well spent. Your email may end up in as spam, amybe automatically deleted by a user who only opens mail from people he knows. You pay for emails that are delivered and not necessarily opened. Besides this doesn't keep with our free or low cost theme.
Method 2: Contact someone in the the same business that covers the topic of your magazine and ask them to send out a email blast and you will include an ad for free. This actually happened with CMM Quarterly. I was contacted by someone I know in the business and they graciously offered to email blast their list for me. They possessed the 'coveted list' and so I was able to reach the right people. I had built this relationship over time and built trust with them as a authority in this field and would not abuse the people or their time. This method and method 1 will only get you one audition with the people on the email blast and you must invite them to your site to register so you can build your own list.
Method 3: This method takes more time but will have long term benefits. This will require some time on your part but you must join forums, groups, etc... that have the same theme as your magazine. You must participate and let your name get out there and attract some interest. The point is not to draw attention or promote yourself as the only expert in this field but to provide timely answers and to pose questions and just generally participate in the forums. Now check the forum guidlelines and if permissible attach to your 'signature line' your website. You don't have to point it out to people that it is there, they will find it.
This method can work in conjunction with the other two and will establish interest in your site and magazine.
Subcribers are key and you must weigh in your own mind if you will let others 'buy' your list or 'rent' your list for their own email blasts. The dollar return is small in renting lists unless you do it a lot. Just think of your subcribers in any decision you make.
Expectations
Set a reasonable expectation of reward for all your hard work , an unreasonable expectation could set you up for disappointment if you let it. You must honestly look at what your building. Are you reaching your goals? Do your expectations exceed reality? Only you can answer these questions. At CMM Quarterly we reached around the world in less than a year although the subcription rate could be better, it always could be better. The point is that I reach a focused audience and a industry specific audience. This is what sells advertising for me. There are larger publications in the field I cover but the specific topics are lost in these publications. Your overall reach might be small in comparision to the larger publications but are you reaching the ones that are specific to your magazine. A word of caution though don't be so pinpoint focused that your appeal is limited and the range of advertisers won't make your efforts worthwhile.

Starting a Business Part 4
This is an on-going series on starting a business. This is part 3 of starting a magazine.
A Magazine Part 3
Here is where you will start generating some costs.
Software
One of the most important factors of starting a magazine business is the software that you will use. I personally use InDesign CS3, this is pricey software but well worth the costs. There are others including Microsoft Publisher. These are two well known softwares and there are others. Search out one that fits your needs and your computer proficiency. Make sure that it will output to .pdf. If not there are free pdf conversion softwares but it is easier to go directly out of your software to pdf.
Website
There are free website available but I would avoid these if possible. They will not have the storage you need over the long haul for your magazine. Sign up for a site that has ample storage site and find a web host that can handle your needs, I use IP4M, http://www.ip4m.net/ They use a joomla application which is easy to use.
Review
So in review we will produce a pdf format magazine that will be the entire magazine. In addition we will use the website to place each article for those that just want to look at the magazine without downloading the current issue. Look at http://www.cmmquarterly.com/ we have a pull-down for the current issue where you have access to the pdf version or to view the website. The website will be where you also keep your previous issues.
Offer
InDesign and some of the other softwares can cost in the several thousands of dollars. However, to get started I would be happy to put the magazine together for you. I charge a nominal fee to put the pdf together and all payments would be through PayPal. Each article would have to already be proofed and pictures ready to insert.
This offer is limited and does not include any magazine that is 'adult' in nature or any magazine based on any dogma that promotes violence based on race, creed, or religion.

Starting a Business Part 3
This is an on-going series on starting a business. Learn how to publish a magazine.
A Magazine Part 2
Content:
It goes without saying no magazine would exist without content. First do a search on the internet and see how your content stacks up against others writing on the same topic. Let me caution you here. You do not need to compare other works against your own for talent and writing skills, that talent will come. Later we will discuss how to get content to fill up your magazine. The main thing you are looking for is does your magazine have the content that people want to read about. What is going to make your magazine different enough to attract people.
You must determine if you have enough content to at least get out several issues that would generate enough interest. I assume since you have some interest in a magazine business that you have some grasp on writing and grammer. This is somewhat important afterall people will be reading your magazine and for them to stay engaged you must have some structure.
Receiving Content:
There are always people willing to write articles whether you have to pay them or not. I would first try to contact people you know with similiar interests. Now for those who have not written about their hobby or passion it might take some talking them into it. This is a great way to get content. Look at this special edition we put together for CMM Quarterly (click on link). This issue was entirely done by contacting instrument builders and asking them to write something. This issue did not cost me any upfront money. For those that saw the exposure would be good for their business it was an opportunity to introduce themselves to others who others. There was one builder who wanted to get paid for an article. There were several manfacturers that did not respond. Remember what we talked about before - rejection. You have to look past that others don't see your vision. For those that did not participate they missed an opportunity to reach the world with their information. CMM Quarterly's subscriptions go around the world and reach every continent. Only through the internet.
Contacting Magazines for Content
This is a great source for content. A word of caution - don't start your magazine thinking that you can build it solely in this method. First you must find an article that matches your audience and whose content is relevant. Then write an email to the publisher, target the editor if possible. A email is perfectly acceptable these days. Introduce yourself and give your web address so they can look over your magazine. Now the tricky part is not being seen as competition so try to choose magazines that are somewhat genetric that have an interesting article that you and your readers would be interested in.
Now there are general rules when requesting articles. Put in your email that if they agree to reprinting an article you would need a by-line. This typically consists of: This article is reprint with permission from XYZ magazine orginally published in Issue xxx, etc... You've probably seen this before. They will now request that their email be in the by-line. This attracts more people going to their site.
It is important through this process to get people to your site if you would like to make money doing this. We will discuss this in more detail later.
Available content off the web must be treated carefully. Just because it is posted on the web doesn't mean you can use it. This is a slippery slope to navigate. If you find a article that is on a web site that you would like to use contact the web owner and see if you can use it and with what restrictions. Most of all make sure they own it and didn't take from someone else and they have the right to grant you permission to use it.

Starting a Business Part 2
Starting a business can be expensive. So you have the capital to start and sustain a business?
Free
There are business' that require no upfront money, or a very minimal amount. They do require persistance and a passion to continue the business in order to sustain it. There are still no free rides.
A Magazine Part 1
If you like to write and share your knowledge this is a great business opportunity with little or no startup costs.
With the surge of the internet into peoples daily lives the idea of publishing a magazine is a good one. With my magazine, CMM Quarterly (http://www.cmmquarterly.com/) there is no overhead costs except the amount of time I'm willing to put into it.
Here is my suggestion for a magazine. This is how I run my magazine. First start a website and lay it out that is user friendly. Keep it simple and don't make it so crowded on the front page that a reader doesn't understand how to navigate the site. Do not commit to printing a magazine. This is extremely expensive and more and more magazines and newspapers are moving away from printing. Instead provide a downloadable .pdf format of your magazine and provide the copy of each issue and back issues on the website.
The .pdf format is an easy transportable format that is increasing in popularity in the magazine business since the reader can take the magazine on his portable device, iphone, etc... and can read it at anytime and pass it along to others. This last part is key, passing the magazine to others generates traffic on your site.
First you must have a passion for the content of the magazine. What is your passion? Could you write every article? Do you have enough for a magazine or just for a newsletter? A magazine can vary in size from 20 pages to over a hundred. Later we will talk about getting articles and content.

Starting a Business, Part 1
This will be an ongoing series on starting a business, not in a technical sense, like where to get a business license, whether a LLC or Corporation, etc... but from a personal view.
About me:
I own 2 LLCs and I want to share the blessings and curses of both. One business is a software business and the other is a magazine, http://www.cmmquarterly.com/. The business has been operating for over 4 years and the magazine for 2 years. What I will share in this series is my experiences. Hopefully I can point out some pitfalls that you can avoid.
Entrepreneur
Entrepreneur, what is it? Am I one? An entrepreneur is someone with a passion to do something they love. Having said that; they are sometimes crazy to endure the hardships and rejections that come along with starting a business. If you are someone that doesn't deal with rejection well it is time to rethink what you're doing before you invest a lot of money. This truely something you need to stop and think about. No, really stop and think about it. Can you handle even your closest friends not believing in what you think can sell and what is marketable?
There are hundreds that will line up to tell you can't do it. Each one may be sincere but look at their comments objectively. Is there some truth to what they are saying? or are they of the group that haven't or will not put out any effort of their own to make anything to succeed. Plenty of people are experts in things they don't know anything about.
Honesty
Honesty in business affairs is of the utmost importance. Your character matters. Having the best product out there is great but a bad reputation is a deal killer.
Honesty also applies to yourself. Be honest with yourself and admit your mistakes if not to others at least to yourself. Look honestly at your business, did you make the right choices? So you need to change anything?
Well that's it for now. Come back and maybe I can pass on some insight.
